An AV idol (adult video idol; AV actress (AV女優, AV joyū?)) is a Japanese idol who works in the pornographic business, often both as an actress as well as a model as the video performances have a wide range, from just the idol strolling around their house doing chores in bikinis to hardcore porn. Since the dawn of the AV industry in the early 1980s, hundreds of AV idols have debuted every year, with an average career span of about a year, appearing in five or ten videos during that time.[1] Notable AV idols have careers spanning several years, have a high general public recognition, or make a significant impact on the industry in some other manner.

he AV industry in Japan

The line between "adult" and family entertainment in Japan is not as clear-cut as it is in some other countries. A celebrity may appear in AVs after already having established a career in mainstream television. Also, it is not rare for a popular AV actress to go on to mainstream celebrity.[3] Fornander reports that "a background in porn is not necessarily a skeleton in the cupboard anymore. In some cases, it’s a career move."[1]

The AV, or "Adult Video" market is a major industry in Japan, reportedly worth about ¥400 billion per year. In 1992, it was reported that over 11 AVs were being made every day by over 70 production companies in Tokyo alone. The AV market was estimated to make up about 30 percent of Japan's video rentals.[1] It was estimated in 1994 that, between legal and illegal videos, around 14,000 AVs a year were being made in the country, in contrast to about 2,500 in the United States.

Nursing roles and education were first defined by Florence Nightingale, following her experiences caring for the wounded in the Crimean War.[1] Prior to this, nursing was thought to be a trade with few common practices or documented standards. Nightingale's concepts were used as a guide for establishing nursing schools at the beginning of the twentieth century, which were mostly hospital-based training programs emphasizing the development of a set of clinical skills.[1] The profession's early utilization of a general, hospital-based education is sometimes credited for the wide range of roles nurses have assumed within health-care, and is contrasted with present-day nursing education, which is increasingly specialized and typically offered at post-secondary institutions.

A love hotel (ラブホテル, rabu hoteru?) is a type of short-stay hotel found in Japan operated primarily for the purpose of allowing couples privacy to have sexual intercourse. Similar establishments also exist in other East Asian countries and regions such as South Korea[1], Taiwan and Hong Kong. The same concept also exists in Central and South America, particularly in Guatemala, Chile and even the USA and Mexico where they are called "autohotels" [2], Brazil, where they are called "Motel", and in Argentina, often called "albergues transitorios" but also referred to as "telos" (after reversing the syllables of the word "hotel").

Love hotels can usually be identified using symbols such as hearts and the offer of a room rate for a "rest" (休憩, kyūkei?) as well as for an overnight stay.[3] The period of a "rest" varies, typically ranging from one to three hours. Cheaper daytime off-peak rates are common. In general, reservations are not possible, leaving the hotel will forfeit access to the room, and overnight stay rates only become available after 10pm. These hotels may be used for prostitution or by budget-travellers sharing accommodation.

Entrances are discreet and interaction with staff is minimized, with rooms often selected from a panel of buttons and the bill settled by pneumatic tube, automatic cash machines, or a pair of hands behind a pane of frosted glass. Although cheaper hotels are often quite utilitarian, higher-end hotels may feature fanciful rooms decorated with anime characters, equipped with rotating beds, ceiling mirrors, or karaoke machines,[4] strange lighting or styled similarly to dungeons, sometimes including S&M gear.[5]

These hotels are typically either concentrated in city districts close to stations, near highways on the city outskirts, or in industrial districts. Love hotel architecture is sometimes garish, with buildings shaped like castles, boats or UFOs and lit with neon lighting.[3] However, some more recent love hotels are very ordinary looking buildings, distinguished mainly by having small, covered, or even no windows.

A frigidarium is a large cold pool to drop into after enjoying a hot Roman bath. The Caldarium and the Tepidarium opened the pores of the skin. The cold water would close the pores. There would be a small pool of cold water or sometimes a large Swimming pool.

An octagonal example measuring over 5m across was excavated at Bax Farm, near Faversham, Kent in 2006. This had a large brick conduit for supplying cold water. The walls were originally decorated with painted plaster, and the floors with coloured tesserae. This is the first example to be found in south-east England. It had been suggested that the octagonal frigidarium could have been used for Christian baptism or Jewish sacred bathing (Pitts, 2006).
